I use to like them, but now I have become a fan of passives. That reminds me though I need to sell those EMG's.

Well there is a battle between 2 set here listed below:

85/81 set or 60/81 set. Which set would give me the best sound for metal? I know an 81 is golden to my ear but i cant recall hearing a 60 or 85.

Loads of people here play EMGs, most of the play 81/81 or 81/85 in the bridge. Personally I've never tried them. My dime already has SD hotrails and a Bill Lawrence in the neck and my other git is a tele..

I just recently put 85/81 emgs in my ltd and they sound fantastic. They give a lot more kick, sustain and the harmonics sound pro. Good luck with your buy but remember to get them professionally wired, you don’t won’t some idiot soldering all over the place and making a dogs breakfast out of your guitar wiring.

I used to have an 81 in my Washburn... I think EMGs are kind of over-rated. Don't get me wrong, they're good, but not mind-blowingly outrageous like some people make them out to be.

If I use them again, I'll probably try an 85 in the bridge of my Ibanez.

85 in the bridge pos, 60 in the neck pos. my personal pref.. once you go EMG you never go back.. except for the one guy. the clean tones have almost a chorus like effect when played "clean" through a decent amp. (on the 60 anyways) 81's are good as well.. but the guitar construction will affect how thick the tone sounds. (an 81 mounted in a strat w/ a pickguard sounds vastly different than an 81 mounted in a les paul or solid body electic w/o a pick guard..

I have an ltd ec1000 with two EMG 81's. They'll give you that "and justice for all" type tone. Loads of saturated distortion and sustain. They also have a lot of high end bite, if that's what you like.

imho duncan sounds better than emg. emg kinda sounds like a computer, which is ok if thats what you want. but EVERYONE plays em.
