made in japan, 1988, licensed floyd rose, rust all over the bottom of the bridge, and the pots are scratchy. is it worth $400?

Absolutely. The Charvel and Ibanez necks of the late 80's / early 90's are some of the best you will find.

yep, but depending on the exact make/model of the trem you might have difficulty finding parts for it.. Pots are a dime a dozen.. throw some modern pickups in that bitch and clean up the trem, you've got a pretty sweet axe to work with.

can't i just replace the entire trem with something better?

it depends.. I've got a late 80's super strat that Fender put out to compete w/ the charvels, ibanez, etc of the day.. It has a Kahler licensed floyd rose trem, and since its so different I cannot just put a regular FR or licensed FR because I'd have to reroute the whole thing. and it mounts slightly differently.. the one on that guitar looks to be more standard in appearance though..

worth it... the old charvels are getting harde and harder to find...

I'd say go for it, Jap guitars are usually built to a much better standard than Korean and Chinese ones.
